Purple4Polio is in evidence at Melksham! The Purple4Polio initiative is an exciting partnership between Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland and the Royal Horticultural Society to showcase the purple crocus as a symbol of Rotary’s worldwide campaign to eradicate polio, with its colour representing the purple dye used to mark the finger of a child who has been immunized. With the success of the campaign, the amount of polio-endemic countries has dropped from 125 to just three, with over 2.5 billion children now receiving vaccinations. As part of the Purple4Polio initiative, crocus corms were planted last year by volunteers at various locations in the town, including this lovely display which was seen last week in St Michael and All Angels’ churchyard.
